Deadly Shooting in Steelton Triggers School Lockdowns

A deadly shooting in Steelton, Pennsylvania, led to the lockdown of the entire Steelton-Highspire School District on Tuesday (October 7). The incident occurred inside a corner store at the intersection of Fourth and Poplar Streets, where one man was killed and another wounded. According to Dauphin County District Attorney Fran Chardo, the suspect remains at large and is believed to be armed with a handgun.

Following the shooting, a standoff with police unfolded blocks away at Second and Swatara streets. Officers from multiple agencies, equipped with heavy gear, established a perimeter while a Pennsylvania State Police helicopter circled overhead. Steelton Mayor Ciera Dent advised residents to avoid the area during the active situation.

As a precaution, the Steelton-Highspire School District initiated lockdowns across all campuses. The district later implemented a staggered dismissal process, ensuring students' safety before allowing them to leave. Classes were canceled for Wednesday, with a Flexible Instruction Day planned.

Steelton Borough Police Chief William Schaub confirmed that the shooting and standoff were connected, though the suspect remains unidentified. The incident is considered isolated, and the investigation continues as police seek the suspect.
