A brush fire in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, on Thursday (March 20) was caused by what the local fire chief described as "stupid burning." According to Berrysburg and Community Fire Company Chief Robert Savidge Jr., the fire was started by a negligent homeowner with a history of similar incidents. The blaze spread to about half an acre before firefighters could bring it under control.
The fire was exacerbated by dry and windy conditions, which allowed it to spread quickly up the side of a mountain. Multiple fire departments, including those from Mifflin Township, Elizabethville, Gratz, Klingerstown, Hickory Corners, Millersburg, and Pillow, responded to the scene to help contain the fire. The Department of Conservation and Natural Resources also assisted in the effort.
Chief Savidge noted that no burn ban was in place at the time of the fire. It remains unclear whether the homeowner responsible for the fire will face any charges. The incident highlights the ongoing challenges of managing fire risks in dry conditions and the importance of responsible burning practices.
