Lancaster Commissioners Note Historic County Events For Black History Month

(Lancaster, PA) -- Lancaster County Commissioners are encouraging residents to learn more about the roles Black people have played in local history. The county leaders joined members of the NAACP's Lancaster County Branch Wednesday to recognize Black History Month. Historians say Lancaster played a significant role in African American history as part of the underground railroad and the "Christiana Resistance." That time of rioting in 1851 happened as armed Lancaster county citizens defended their neighbors from southern slave owners who were trying to recapture them. Some consider that action to be the unofficial first battle of the civil war.
