OSCARS: "Harder" Will Smith Jokes Were Cut

TeeRoy's 2 Cents:

  • The jokes he made were perfect. "Harder" jokes weren't really necessary.
  • We'd love to hear those other jokes. Hopefully Kimmel will share them.
  • The slap will probably be brought up in Oscars telecasts for years to come.

Jimmy Kimmel's Oscars monologue contained some jokes about the slapping incident at last year's ceremony, but he was actually prepared to go much harder on Will Smith.

Kimmel's wife Molly McNearney, who was also an executive producer of the Oscars telecast, says there were a lot more Will Smith jokes written for the monologue but they were ultimately cut. She tells People, "We didn't want to make this year all about last year. I cannot tell you how many Will Smith jokes we had that then we got rid of. We think that only the best for that room made it. There were certainly some that went harder, but we didn't think that was our place to do that. That should be Chris Rock, not us."

Instead of targeting Smith directly, McNearney says they opted instead to joke about the reaction to the slap. Kimmel said, "We have strict policies in place. If anyone in this theater commits an act of violence at any point during the show, you will be awarded the Oscar for Best Actor and permitted to give a 19-minute-long speech." He then added, "If anything unpredictable or violent happens during the ceremony, just do what you did last year: nothing. Sit there and do absolutely nothing. Maybe even give the assailant a hug."
