DAUPHIN COUNTY, Pa. (WHP) — The Central Dauphin School District is urging parents to speak with their students about the dangers of a new TikTok trend.
On Tuesday, the district issued a warning about the #ChromebookChallenge, where it says students are jamming lead or metal into their Chromebooks' charging ports or stabbing the batteries in order to purposefully short out the computers, causing them to catch fire.
"There are videos online depicting students using the lead refills for a mechanical pencil in a port. It will start smoking and can cause an explosion," the district wrote in a Facebook post. "Please speak to your student(s) about this potential safety hazard and possible damage to CDSD property."
The district reminded parents that families will have to pay damage costs.
